Indiana counted 168,412 SSI recipients in the SSA’s most recent state
-wide data report. That figure places Indiana among the top 15 states for total SSI enrollment. I track these numbers every quarter at ssa.gov.

SSA issues SSI on the first of each month. April 1, 2026 falls on a Wednesday. Indiana recipients should see funds deposited that morning.
Standard Payment Date
Wednesday — no federal holiday conflict.
Federal Benefit Rate (Individual)
$967/month
2026 COLA-adjusted maximum SSI rate.
Federal Benefit Rate (Couple)
$1,450/month
Both spouses must individually qualify for SSI.
I always verify payment dates at SSA Publication No. 05-10031. That document lists every adjusted payment date through the end of the calendar year.
Indiana State Supplement Amounts
Indiana does not administer its own state supplement. SSA pays Indiana recipients the federal rate only. I confirmed this through SSA’s Indiana state supplement profile.
That means your maximum monthly check is $967 as an individual. There is no additional Indiana top-up payment deposited separately.
⚠️ Important Note
Some neighboring states like Ohio and Illinois do pay supplements. Moving across state lines can change your monthly benefit. Contact SSA before relocating.

🏦
Direct Deposit
Funds post by 9:00 AM ET on April 1. Most Indiana banks release funds immediately.
💳
Direct Express® Card
Loaded on April 1. Call 1-800-333-1795 to check balance. No fee for one ATM withdrawal monthly.
📬
Paper Check
SSA discourages paper checks. Delivery takes 3–5 business days after April 1. Mailed from a federal payment center.
I strongly recommend Direct Express over paper checks. Lost checks require filing Form SSA-1715 and waiting up to 30 days for reissuance.
What Can Delay Your April 2026 SSI Payment?
Most delays I’ve seen fall into four categories. Each one requires a different resolution path.
Unreported Income Change
Earning over $65/month in wages without reporting triggers a payment hold. SSA uses Form SSA-8202 for redeterminations.
Resource Limit Exceeded
Individual resource limit is $2,000. Couples face a $3,000 cap. Bank accounts, stocks, and certain property count.
Address Not Updated
Paper checks mailed to wrong Indiana addresses cause delays. Update your address at my Social Security immediately.
Continuing Disability Review
SSA conducts CDRs every 3–7 years. A pending CDR can freeze payments. Respond to all Form SSA-455 requests promptly.

I spoke with a Marion County recipient — I’ll call her Diane — in . Her $914 SSI check did not arrive on April 1. She panicked immediately.
The cause was simple: Diane had opened a savings account holding $2,200. That exceeded the $2,000 resource limit by just $200. SSA suspended her payment automatically.
She called the SSA helpline at 1-800-772-1213 on April 2. After confirming she spent down her savings, SSA reinstated her benefit within 7 business days.
The lesson: monitor your countable resources every single month. A $200 overage cost Diane nearly two weeks of income.
